SUKMA Badminton: Penang’s Shan Zi Upsets Letshanaa, FT's Justin Ho Cruises Into Final

SIBU, Aug 23 (Bernama) —  National badminton women's singles player K Letshanaa from Selangor fell short in the semifinals of the Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) 2024 individual event, losing to Penang’s Oo Shan Zi at the Sibu Indoor Stadium here today.

Letshanaa, ranked 59th in the world, was edged out 19-21, 21-12, 20-22 by the 299th-ranked player, dashing her hopes for a second gold after winning in the mixed team category earlier.

In the final tomorrow, Shan Zi will face Sarawak’s Wong Ling Ching, who won 21-18, 21-8 against Selangor’s Siti Nurshuhaini Azman.

In the men’s singles, top seed Justin Hoh from the Federal Territories (FT) advanced to the final with a straight-set victory, 21-18, 21-9, over Selangor’s Chua Kim Sheng.

He will go against Penang’s Ong Zhen Yi, who also won in straight sets, 21-18, 22-20, against Hooi Shao Herng from FT.

In men’s doubles, FT’s Muhammad Fazriq Mohamad Razif and Bryan Jeremy Goonting were defeated by Selangor’s Lok Hong Guan and Muhammad Faiq Haziq Masawi in a three-set match, 21-14, 16-21, 22-24.

In women’s doubles, Perak’s Chong Jie Yu and Vannee Gobi Yap advanced to the final after a rubber-set win over Kedah’s Cheng Su Hui and Cheng Su Yin.

They will now play Johor’s Dania Sofea Zaidi and Low Zi Yu, who won in straight sets against Amanda Yap and Ong Xie Yee.

In mixed doubles, Penang’s Tan Wei Liang and Khor Jing Wen defeated host team pair Jeremy Juan and Genevie Lim in a three-set match to reach the final.

They will play against Melaka’s Aaron Tan and Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan, who defeated Selangor’s Mohamad Haris Sufian Shazlan and Wong Zi Yi in straight sets.

All five finals are scheduled for tomorrow, starting at 11 am.
