KUCHING, Aug 24 (Bernama) -- Hosts Sarawak confirmed the title of 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) overall champions on the final day today, pipping the Federal Territories (FT) by a single gold medal in one of the most closely-fought races in the Games’ history.
Sarawak emerged as overall champions for the fourth time - after the 1990, 1992 and 1994 editions - with a haul of 76 golds, 55 silvers and 70 bronzes when the curtain came down on SUKMA 2024 after two weeks of intense competition.
FT, overall champions of the 1986 (as Kuala Lumpur) and 2014 editions, missed out on a third crown with a haul of 75-65-72, with Selangor (56-64-61), Penang (41-45-52) and Terengganu (41-36-47) rounding out the top five.
FT, though, created history when they won the SUKMA men’s football gold medal for the first time after edging Melaka 2-1 in an ill-tempered final at the Mukah Stadium.
Kedah, meanwhile, bagged four out of the 14 gold medals at stake in sailing today, with Terengganu and Sabah winning three golds each, Sarawak (two) and Selangor and Pahang (one each).
SUKMA 2024, which featured 488 events from 37 sports and involving over 12,000 athletes and officials, officially concluded tonight.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim officiated the closing ceremony at the Unity Stadium here.
Meanwhile, Selangor swimmer Andrew Goh and Negeri Sembilan shooter Gan Chen Jie were crowned SUKMA 2024 Sportsman and Sportswoman respectively.
