KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- Terengganu is the latest location for the DE Rantau programme, an initiative under the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) introduced in 2022, after Penang, Langkawi, Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, and Perak.

MDEC, in a statement today, informed that the unique combination of beaches, cultural heritage, and natural scenery makes Terengganu a preferred location for digital nomads (those who perform their occupation entirely over the Internet while travelling).

"The DE Rantau programme aims to position Malaysia as the destination of choice for digital nomads in Southeast Asia while driving digital adoption and tourism throughout the country.

"The DE Rantau Nomad Pass, which is an immigration facility created specifically for digital nomads from abroad, has also been enhanced as it can now be applied for by professionals working in fields other than technology to work remotely from Malaysia while travelling," according to the statement.

MDEC said that the requirement to submit a Bank Guarantee for Chinese and Bangladeshi nationals has also been replaced with the option of either a security bond or a personal bond.

This option, he said, reflected MDEC's commitment to making Malaysia more accessible and friendly to global digital nomads, adding that the DE Rantau Nomad Pass has so far received more than 3,500 applications with 1,741 approved.

"This programme offers a dynamic ecosystem with 2,183 DE Rantau hubs, which are various types of accommodation certified by MDEC as strategic and safe, have high-speed broadband internet networks, and various other facilities.

"MDEC has also collaborated with 16 DE Rantau Ecosystem Partners in various sectors such as transportation, tourism, cashless payment, healthcare, insurance, and co-working spaces," read the statement.
