NEW DELHI, Aug 29 (Bernama) -- India's northeastern state of Tripura has been declared a natural calamity area after unprecedented floods caused widespread destruction and dozens of deaths.
Floods triggered by heavy rain in recent days have killed at least 31 people and the damage to property and infrastructure is estimated at US$1.8 billion, local media reported on Thursday, citing government officials.
More than 53,000 people rendered homeless are sheltering in 369 relief camps.
Bordering Bangladeshi, Tripura is one of India's smallest states and has a population of about 4.2 million.
Meanwhile, the death toll from rain-related incidents in three days in the western state of Gujarat reached 35.
About 18,000 people have been evacuated from Gujarat's flooded cities and villages.
