BANGKOK, Aug. 29 (Bernama) -- Thailand’s Parliament approved the “Thailand-EU Comprehensive Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA)” on Thursday, marking a significant milestone in advancing relations between Thailand and the European Union.

According to the Thai Foreign Ministry, the agreement aims to strengthen ties between Thailand, the European Union, and its 27 member states by promoting a closer and more strategic partnership.

The approval also signifies a major step forward in enhancing international cooperation and establishing a robust partnership framework between Thailand and the EU.

"The PCA is set to enhance dialogue and cooperation across a range of sectors, including politics, trade, investment, and social issues.

"A key benefit of the agreement is its potential to significantly boost trade and investment opportunities between Thailand and the EU," the Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

The PCA is expected to expedite negotiations for a Thailand-EU Free Trade Agreement, facilitate access to best practice standards, and enhance the competitiveness of both regions.

In addition, the Ministry noted that the PCA will open avenues for increased funding and research initiatives in science, technology, and innovation.

It stated that this support is anticipated to play a crucial role in Thailand’s economic recovery and development policies, driving progress in these critical areas.

Another notable aspect of the PCA is its potential impact on travel where the Thai Foreign Ministry said the agreement is expected to support the consideration of Schengen visa exemptions for Thai ordinary passport holders, thereby facilitating easier travel for Thai citizens.

“Furthermore, the PCA is poised to bolster Thailand’s position on the international stage, including its bid for membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

"By solidifying Thailand’s role as a strategic partner of the EU in Southeast Asia, the agreement underscores Thailand’s growing importance in the region and on the global front," the Ministry said.
