Surenjav Becomes Mongolia's First Female Paralympic Champion

PARIS, Aug 30 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- Mongolia's Ulambayar Surenjav won the gold medal in Para taekwondo in the W K44-52kg category at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, defeating Iran's Zahra Rahimi 5-2 in Thursday's final.

Surenjav's victory marked the first time a female athlete from Mongolia has won a Paralympic gold medal. It is also the third gold medal and the fifth medal overall in Mongolia's Paralympic history.

Dambadondog Baatarjav won Mongolia's first-ever Paralympic gold in the men's individual recurve standing event at Beijing 2008, and powerlifter Enkhbayar Sodnompiljee won the country's second gold in the men's 107kg at Tokyo 2020, with a new Paralympic record of 245kg.

Rahimi's silver was the first medal for Iran at the Paris Paralympics. Meryem Betul Cavdar of Türkiye and Ana Japaridze of Georgia shared the bronze medals.
