Officials In German State Of Saxony Correct Error In Election Results

02/09/2024 06:04 PM

LEIPZIG (Germany), Sept 2 (Bernama-dpa) -- Provisional election results in the eastern German state of Saxony have been corrected, with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) now projected to receive one seat fewer in the next state parliament, reported German news agency (dpa).

Saxony's electoral commission said on Monday morning that a software error was to blame for the incorrect calculation of seats based on preliminary results from Sunday's vote.

That means the AfD will in fact not hold a so-called blocking minority of more than a third of seats in Saxony's Parliament, which would have given the party an effective veto over certain legislation and judicial appointments that require a two-thirds majority.

It remains unclear when final election results will be released in Saxony or in the German state of Thuringia, which also elected a new state parliament on Sunday.
