SHANGHAI, Sept 9 (Bernama) -- China has shown a high level of commitment in its bilateral cooperation with Malaysia to combat cross-border crime, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He said this was among the key points discussed in a bilateral meeting with China's State Councillor and Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong, following his participation in the Global Public Security Cooperation Forum of Lianyungang (GPSCFL) 2024 in Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province, China, today.

Ahmad Zahid said that at the meeting, both countries also agreed to continue cooperation in several other areas, including enhanced joint training and the exchange of senior officers in the fields of enforcement and security.

“In addition to discussing several other important issues, this meeting served as a platform to strengthen cooperation between the Home Ministry and the government of Malaysia with the republic, particularly in combating cross-border crime.

“China's commitment to Malaysia is at a very high level, and we hope it will continue to be strengthened, especially with a future visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping to Malaysia,” he said in a statement to the Malaysian media covering his visit to China.

Elaborating on the matter, Ahmad Zahid said that Malaysia and China’s cooperation in combating cross-border crime involving online gambling has shown positive results over the past few years, proving the effectiveness of their collaboration.

He also expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the conference and the commitment demonstrated by China, as well as the positive response from Malaysia. Both countries are determined to ensure that their bilateral relationship remains at the highest level.

He noted that the forum has provided Malaysia with an opportunity to learn from and hear about the security measures taken by other countries, which can be adapted domestically.

“With an increasingly interconnected world, international cooperation is crucial for addressing the increasingly complex and evolving security issues globally.

“I hope today’s meeting not only brings success to both countries but also has a significant impact on global stability and prosperity,” he said.

Ahmad Zahid arrived in Lianyungang City yesterday for a five-day working visit to China. He is scheduled to arrive in Shanghai tonight to continue his visit and will attend the Malaysia-China Halal Business Forum organised by Halal Development Corporation (HDC) tomorrow.
