SESB Begins Developing Largest Bess In Southeast Asia

11/09/2024 12:39 PM

KOTA KINABALU, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) will develop a 100 megawatt (MW) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a maximum energy storage capacity of 400 megawatt-hour (MWh) in Lahad Datu, which is set to become the largest BESS in Southeast Asia.

SESB chief executive officer Mohd Yaakob Jaafar said the project will commence this month and is expected to be completed by June 30, 2025.

He said the project will enhance the reserve margin capacity of the Sabah Grid during peak times and support the expansion of large-scale solar energy capacity.

“This project will improve the stability of generation capacity in the Sabah Grid while contributing to environmental sustainability and increasing the potential for renewable energy generation,” he said in a statement today.

Last week, Mohd Yaakob visited the Dam Road Main Entry Substation (PMU) in Lahad Datu to inspect the upgrade of the Dam Road PMU to a 275kV voltage, which will serve as the substation for the BESS injection point.

The trust given by ECoS and the Sabah government to SESB for the implementation of BESS will be shouldered with full responsibility to ensure the project is successfully completed within the targeted timeframe, he said.
