SEREMBAN, Sept 11 (Bernama) -- The Negeri Sembilan state government aims to build 35 Centralised Labour Quarters (CLQ) by 2028 to accommodate at least 150,000 foreign workers in the state.

Local Government, Housing and Transport Committee chairman, J. Arul Kumar, said that so far the Seremban City Council (MBS) has received 17 applications to build CLQs, providing a total of 6,056 beds.

He said to date five CLQs have been completed and are operational, housing 712 foreign workers in Sri Sendayan, Bandar Enstek, and Mantin.

"Currently, we have approximately 150,000 foreign workers. It is estimated that we need 35 CLQs in the state, with 80% located in Seremban and the rest in Tampin, Jempol, and Port Dickson," he told reporters at Wisma Negeri today.

The Nilai state assemblyman also urged all new industrial area developers in the state to provide on-site worker dormitories.

He said this is a crucial measure to ensure the state government can accommodate foreign workers in a planned manner.

Arul Kumar expressed hope that all employers will cooperate to ensure full compliance with the Employees' Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodations and Amenities Act 1990 (Act 446).

He emphasised that every employer must establish a CLQ that adheres to the requirements set by the Department of Labour and local authorities, including the mandatory fencing and security of the premises, as well as providing basic amenities.

"This will guarantee the right of every foreign worker to have comfortable and safe accommodation," he said.
