BATU KAWAN, Sept 12 (Bernama) -- A United States (US) based multinational engineering, design and manufacturing services company Benchmark Electronics today opens its fourth facility in Penang with an  investment US$20 million (US$1=RM4.3285).

Benchmark Group vice-president Datuk Dr Bala Murugan said the new facility, located in Batu Kawan Industrial Park, will be over 8,000 square metres with space to further expand at the site and with this new building, Benchmark will now maintain more than 40,000 square metres of production space in Penang.

He noted that with the construction of the new Penang facility, Benchmark which now employs about 1,500 people in the state, will be hiring up to 200 people over the next few years.

"This will be Benchmark's fourth facility in the region and will become a critical addition to existing facilities, allowing for vertical integration of key capabilities and will focus primarily on serving customers in the semiconductor capital equipment and commercial aerospace sectors.

"This marks a significant milestone, highlighting our advanced capabilities and our commitment to generating more business and employment opportunities in the area," he said during the opening ceremony here today.

The new facility was officiated by Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Penang Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak. Also present were Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, Benchmark president and chief executive officer (CEO) Jeff Benck, InvestPenang CEO Datuk Loo Lee Lian and Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) Penang director Muhammad Ghaddaffi Sardar Mohamed.

Bala said Benchmark is expanding its Penang facility to increase capacity for new and existing customers, supporting the anticipated growth of the semiconductor industry in 2025 while enhancing its vertical integration capabilities.

He pointed out that the expansion will enable Benchmark to improve operational efficiencies, uphold quality standards and accelerate time to market for customer products.

"Benchmark will offer advanced capabilities such as e-beam welding, large form factor 5-axis machining, type-2 cleaning and is establishing one of the largest welding and frame manufacturing centres in the region," he added.

Meanwhile, Jeff Benck said Benchmark Penang is critical to the company’s expanding operations in Asia and is enthusiastic about growing Benchmark’s manufacturing capabilities in Malaysia.

"This facility will enhance our capacity and expertise, enabling us to better serve our current customers and meet the growing interest from new customers aiming to regionalise their production across the Asia-Pacific region. The new investment will also deepen our well-established roots in the Penang community," he added.

Chow said Benchmark Electronics, a Tempe, Arizona-based global provider of engineering, design and manufacturing services, first entered Penang in 2007 and today the new expansion features several upgrades designed to better service its customers including an over 200 per cent increase in production capacity.

"This expansion is a testament to Benchmark's commitment to growth and innovation in the region," he added.

The new facility complements the company’s three other facilities in Bayan Lepas.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement issued after the event, MIDA CEO Datuk Sikh Shamsul brahim Sikh Abdul Majid said this expansion by Benchmark underscores Malaysia's standing as a top choice for investment as well as showcases the strong ecosystem MIDA has built for advanced manufacturing.

"We are eager to see the positive impact this expansion will have on the local community — from new job opportunities to boosting the local economy.

"We also look forward to the groundbreaking products and solutions that Benchmark will bring to life here, which will advance Malaysia's role in advanced manufacturing," he added.
