LABUAN, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- Labuan has set a modest yet hopeful target for the upcoming 14th Malaysia Para Games (Para SUKMA), aiming to secure four gold, four silver, and nine bronze medals.

Labuan Sports Council chairman Rithuan Ismail said three athletes, who have shown remarkable improvement, are key to achieving the gold medals.

He said the athletes are Rosabell Rozell Parinus competing in the 100m T36 track event, Labo Taulim in both the 50m and 100m S9 freestyle swimming, and Avrinda Anis in the BC2 Boccia event, a precision ball sport similar to bocce and related to bowls and petanque.

“We hope our athletes will once again bring glory to Labuan sports and positively enhance Labuan’s image, regardless of their abilities,” said Rithuan at the Labuan Flag Handover ceremony for the Labuan Para SUKMA contingent at the Financial Park Complex.

Rithuan said Labuan is also banking on Rafli Suhaili, competing in powerlifting (49kg best lift and 49kg total lift), Geofrezer in the F20 long jump, and Labo Taulim in the 200m S9 individual medley swimming event to secure silver medals.

Labuan Department of Youth and Sports director Mahanum Fauzi emphasised that all the athletes have undergone comprehensive training in preparation for the Games.

"We have provided nutritional support and holistic training to ensure all our athletes are well-prepared. While our targets remain modest, the spirit of sportsmanship is high," she said.

Mahanum said Labuan's modest approach to this year's Games reflects a commitment to both the athletes' individual development and the pride of representing Labuan on the national stage.

“All eyes will be on these athletes as they strive to exceed expectations in the Games, which will take place from Sept 22-28,” she said.

She added that the target for bronze medals includes track events, table tennis, badminton, swimming, tenpin bowling, and lawn bowls.
