Ambassador Expresses Optimism On Malaysia-Vietnam Ties

17/09/2024 02:08 PM

PHNOM PENH, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Ambassador to Vietnam Datuk Tan Yang Thai has reaffirmed that the broad contour of bilateral ties between both nations will continue to flourish.

He said strong diplomatic engagements between the two ASEAN members have featured prominently — transcending beyond traditional cooperation to strong people-to-people relations since the ties began in 1973.

“Malaysia considers Vietnam as an important partner, especially as the two countries explore and expand new areas of cooperation, including the development of the halal industry and renewable energy.

“Bilateral trade between our two countries continues to flourish, and our investments in each other’s economies have created opportunities for growth and development,” Tan said at the 67th National Day and 61st Malaysia Day celebrations held in Hanoi on Monday.

The ambassador began his speech in solidarity with the Vietnamese people's suffering after Typhoon Yagi ravaged parts of the country last week, especially the northern region.

“In the wake of the recent calamity brought by Typhoon Yagi, our thoughts are with those affected by this devastating event. The destruction left in its path is a stark reminder of the unpredictable forces of nature.

“However, it is also a testament to the incredible strength and resilience of the Vietnamese people. In times of crisis, it is the collective spirit, compassion, and determination of the people that shine brightest,” said the ambassador.

More than 300 people have lost their lives. Early damages have been estimated at US$1.6 billion and are likely to rise as the country continues to grapple with massive floods, gusty winds and landslides.

Tan said next year will mark another significant year for Malaysia–Vietnam relations as they commemorate a decade of establishing their Strategic Partnership.

“I am also delighted to see the interactions and exchanges between the students of our institutions of higher learning, the increase in the number of Vietnamese students applying to continue their tertiary education in Malaysia, the continued participation in the Malaysia Technical Cooperation Programme, and the steady two-way flow of tourists between our two countries.

“In the spirit of this significant day, let us renew our commitment to the principles of independence, unity, and regional cooperation. May our two countries continue to thrive, and may the friendship between Malaysia and Vietnam be further strengthened in the years to come,” Tan said in concluding his speech.
