Claims Of Govt Interference In MACC Investigations Baseless - Political Secretary

27/09/2024 05:33 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 (Bernama) --  Claims of interference by the current government in the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) investigation of former premier Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, his sons, and Tun Daim Zainuddin are baseless, and only serve to undermine public trust in the government’s anti-corruption drive.

Political Secretary to the Finance Minister, Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, made this statement in response to a recent FMT article titled “PMO Denies Anwar Instructed MACC to Probe Dr M’s Sons, Daim.”

The article referenced a Bloomberg report on a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), which denied issuing any directives or interfering in MACC investigations.

In a statement posted on X, Muhammad Kamil pointed out that one of the key challenges faced by the current administration is the perception that government agencies, including the MACC, are being used as political tools.

This skepticism, he noted, is rooted in the actions of previous governments, which have shaped public perception.

He explained that the appointment of the current MACC chief commissioner took place during the tenure of the eighth Prime Minister, before the present administration under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Muhammad Kamil reaffirmed the government’s consistent commitment to combating corruption and that it will not falter in upholding integrity, under Anwar’s leadership.

He described the recent allegations as yet another malicious attempt by certain “deep-state actors” to sow political discord, intended to divert the government’s focus from pressing issues such as economic recovery and improving the livelihoods of the people.

“While such political manoeuvres aim to destabilise progress, the government remains focused on addressing key national issues, including economic recovery, job creation, and strengthening governance,” he added.

“The nation’s economic recovery is a direct result of strong governance and sound policies, as seen in the positive economic indicators, such as the strengthening ringgit and rising investor confidence,” he emphasised.

“Such results can only be achieved through transparent governance and a relentless fight against corruption. The government’s continued focus on reform and good governance is essential to maintaining a positive trajectory and securing a prosperous future for the nation,” he concluded.
