Tokyo Game Show 2024 Attracts Over 274,000 Participants

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 1 (Bernama) -- The Tokyo Game Show (TGS 2024), held from Sept 26-29 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, attracted 274,739 participants, up from 243,238 in 2023.

Of the total, the business segment on Sept 26-27 drew 87,180 participants (42,031 on Sept 26, 45,149 on Sept 27). The public days saw 187,559 participants (97,786 on Sept 28, 89,773 on Sept 29).

Themed "Trailblaze the World with Gaming," the event was organised by the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA), Nikkei Business Publications Inc and Dentsu Inc.

In a statement, organisers said the total number of TGS official programme viewers and online visitors to TGS Digital World 2024 would be announced later.

“The next Tokyo Game Show will be held from Sept 25-28, 2025, at Makuhari Messe. Stay tuned for updates on the evolving event,” it added.

TGS 2024 also featured Malaysia’s participation, with the launch of the Malaysia Pavilion showcasing 10 gaming companies.

These companies highlighted innovations to the global market while exploring collaboration with international game developers, content creators, and technology firms.

Coordinated by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the participating companies included Adticles, Ammobox Studios, Bear Down Studios, Dreamscapes Edtech, Esolved MSC, Goolee, Magnus Games Studio, Rcade Studio, Why Knot and Todak Studios.

Key activities at the Malaysia Pavilion included high-level meetings, business matching, and networking with Japanese game publishers and technology incubators, such as Bandai Namco Studio, Nintendo and IMDA Singapore.

During the four-day TGS 2024, MDEC and MATRADE facilitated over 150 potential business matches for Malaysian companies.

Malaysia’s digital gaming content exports are expected to show significant growth this year, with Japan emerging as a key market amid global projections for the gaming industry, which is expected to reach US$187.7 billion in 2024. (US$1 = RM4.12).

Meanwhile, Japanese video game publisher Bandai Namco is collaborating with Malaysian game developers, including Passion Republic and Virtuous Kuala Lumpur, to assist in developing original works and intellectual property (IP).

Japan’s gaming market is projected to reach 66 million users by 2029 and generate US$44.41 billion in revenue by the end of 2024, making it one of the largest in the world.

The global gaming market is estimated to reach US$503.14 billion by 2025, with Asia Pacific set to remain the top market worldwide.
