VIENTIANE, Oct 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is exploring opportunities for collaboration with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) to attract investment and green initiatives.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz conveyed this during a meeting with UNESCAP executive secretary Armida Alisjahbana in conjunction with the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits in Laos.

Tengku Zafrul emphasised Malaysia’s interest in working with UNESCAP, especially as the country prepares to assume the ASEAN chairmanship in 2025.

During the meeting, he highlighted initiatives like the Investment Promotion Agency Study Tour next year, and Malaysia’s progress in the industrial sector through policies such as the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) and the National Semiconductor Strategy.

UNESCAP is one of five regional UN commissions that promotes inclusive, resilient, and sustainable development.

The commission is involved with ASEAN through various initiatives, including investment promotion workshops and green investment projects.

Tengku Zafrul arrived in Vientiane on October 6 to attend the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits, which will run until October 11.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is expected to join the summit, alongside other ASEAN leaders and dialogue partners, including Chinese Premier Li Qiang and United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

During the closing ceremony of the 44th and 45th ASEAN Summits and Related Summits, Laos will officially hand over the chairmanship to Malaysia.

Malaysia will assume the ASEAN chair on Jan 1, 2025.
