Kampung Angkat@Batu Laut: Education, social Media Literacy Intervention Programme for The Community

BANTING, Oct 12 (Bernama) — Education interventions and social media literacy for the community of Kampung Batu Laut, Tanjung Sepat, are among the initiatives planned by the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) under its Santuni MADANI: One Leader One Village programme through the Kampung Angkat Bernama @Batu Laut project.

Bernama Chief Executive Officer Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin said there is a need to prioritise education in the village, and Bernama has developed various programmes to be implemented until mid-next year.

"We will focus on education, particularly on improving the reading levels of children in this village, with a focus on learning English and exposing them to journalism and media literacy.

"We will also bring in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) agencies to provide more information about the benefits and opportunities available for those who pursue this field," she said in her speech during the launch of the  Communication Ministry's Santuni MADANI Program: One Leader One Village  - Kampung Angkat Bernama @Batu Laut in Tanjung Sepat today.

The event was launched by Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government and Sepang Member of Parliament Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu. Also present were Communications Ministry Deputy Secretary-General (Strategic Communications and Creative Industry) Nik Kamaruzaman Nik Husin, Bernama Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, and Kampung Batu Laut headman Subandi Sangandi.

Commenting further, Nur-ul Afida said that social media literacy on issues such as scams and fake investments will also be provided to the villagers, especially given cases of elderly residents being victims of online fraud.

"...and we may seek assistance from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to educate the elderly in this village," she added.

Regarding BERNAMA's success in being the pioneer agency under the Ministry of Communications to implement such a programme, she highlighted that it was made possible through the cooperation of various parties, including the Kampung Batu Laut residents.

She also expressed Bernama's willingness to assist other departments under the Ministry of Communications in publicising their respective adopted village programmes if implemented.

She also conveyed her appreciation to the Bernama team for their hard work in making the programme a success by bringing services directly to the Kampung Batu Laut community.

The programme also featured the handover of books for the Little Free Library (LFL) initiative, an activity held as part of Bernama's 3B Campaign (Baca Bersama Bernama).

More than 200 local residents participated in the event, which included aerobics, quizzes, children's games, and competitions for reading radio and television news.
