SEREMBAN, Oct 12 (Bernama) -- Twenty-one personnel from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) across the country have made history as the first cohort of new students at the Enforcement, Leadership and Management University (ELMU), the first law enforcement university in the Asia region.

ELMU vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Kassim Noor Mohamed said six students from the enforcement agency were pursuing their Bachelor’s degree, while another 15 were studying at the Master’s level on a part-time basis.

"They are a group of lucky pioneers. This is a proud moment for us at ELMU as they, as the first cohort of students, embark on an academic journey that will change their future for the better,” he said in a statement here today.

Kassim added that the students receiving partial scholarships from the ELMU Foundation, in collaboration with the Yayasan Prihatin SPRM, will take an oath during the university's briefing and orientation ceremony.

Haliza Sahafiai, 41, a student in the Masters in Criminology and Criminal Justice programme, chose to continue her studies at this university because it is the only higher education institution offering specialised programmes in law enforcement, relevant to her duties at MACC.

“As a civil servant working in law enforcement at MACC, ELMU is undoubtedly the best choice for deepening my knowledge in my field of interest,” said the mother of four, who currently serves as the Head of the MACC branch in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

MACC Putrajaya headquarters chief senior assistant superintendant, Mohd Suhaimi Mohamed Yusof, 42, who is pursuing a Bachelor in International Law Enforcement (Honours), said he continued his studies to improve his personal skills in his career, think more critically and creatively in giving views and making decisions.

MACC Assistant Commissioner from Sarawak Moses anak Lawrence, 49, said he wanted to master the skills in the field of law enforcement more comprehensively.

He noted that with current developments and advancing technology, ELMU is seen to be able to function as the development axis of an organisation based on law enforcement.

ELMU received operational approval from the Ministry of Higher Education last February and offers 11 study programmes at the foundation, diploma, bachelor's, masters and doctorate levels.
