Sumitomo Life Launches First Eye Insurance For Contact Lens Users

TOKYO, Oct 12 (Bernama-Kyodo) -- Sumitomo Life Insurance Co. has launched an insurance policy specifically covering the costs of treating eye conditions, available exclusively to those who purchase disposable contact lenses sold by the Japanese unit of the US pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson, Kyodo News Agency reported.

The product, offered free of charge to 'Acuvue' users if certain conditions are met, is the first of its kind in Japan's life insurance industry, according to the insurer.

“Memamori Hoken' provides a one-time payout of 5,000 yen ($34) to cover expenses related to eye treatment, including hospitalisation, surgery, or prescribed eye drops.” 

The policy is valid for one year and available to people aged 18 to 59. Johnson & Johnson will cover the premiums.

Eligible customers who purchase a specified amount of Acuvue lenses can access the insurance through Johnson & Johnson's membership app, with enrollment completed on Sumitomo Life's website. Claims for payouts can also be submitted via smartphone.

According to a survey conducted by Johnson & Johnson, a growing number of young people in Japan report poor eye health, with some choosing not to seek treatment as they find visiting a hospital too much trouble.

“By offering the insurance, we hope to lower the hurdles for seeking care and extend the health span of people's eyes,” a Johnson & Johnson official said.
