PwD Participants Showcase Strength, Determination In Rehlah Watan 2024

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 13 (Bernama) -- The participation of persons with disabilities (PwD) in the Rehlah Watan 2024 programme showcased their strength and determination, as they tackled each challenge head-on, defying stereotypes and proving they could excel in a competitive setting, said Information Department (JaPen) director-general Julina Johan.

In a closing speech delivered on her behalf by JaPen senior director (Management), Naim Fahmi Ahmad Tajuddin, Julina highlighted that Rehlah Watan 2024, held for the first time, was a face-to-face communication activity with an explorace theme. The event focused on PwD participants, with 75 individuals divided into 15 teams.

“This programme was designed to raise awareness about the Malaysia MADANI framework among the PwD community and the general public through sports and activities that foster patriotism and a deeper understanding of the nation's history and development.

“Engaging activities were held, such as the Ukhwah (Brotherhood) Run, Kahoot! quizzes, Q-Puzzle challenges and more. Each team navigated through six checkpoints, completing various tasks along the way,” she said, adding that Rehlah Watan 2024 was organised in conjunction with National Sports Day.

Julina emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring that PwDs can lead fulfilling lives and contribute to the nation in areas such as education, career development, accessibility and equal rights, all in line with the Malaysia MADANI vision.

Team leader of the victorious Bonnie Bunyau group, Harman Halion, expressed his joy after leading his team to success, saying that the programme fostered strong teamwork and understanding among participants.

"As athletes, we always carry that competitive spirit, even when using wheelchairs. But it was our teamwork and mutual understanding that kept us moving smoothly and ahead of the rest,” said the 47-year-old former sitting volleyball athlete.

Similarly, Ahmad Nazri Hamzah, 34, who recently won a gold medal in the TPB8 individual event (for physical disabilities) at the 2024 Para Malaysia Games (Para SUKMA), attributed their triumph to their strong sporting spirit.

“We channelled that same spirit into this programme. Even though we come from different sports backgrounds, our common goal was to win, and we achieved that,” he said.

Ahmad Nazri also extended his gratitude to the Ministry of Communications and JaPen for organising Rehlah Watan 2024. He expressed hope that similar events would be held in the future, allowing PwDs to participate, display their talents and showcase their determination.

He praised the event’s venue at the Ministry of Communications for being thoughtfully designed with PwD-friendly facilities, which made it easier for participants to move around and fully engage in the activities.
