Increase Allocation In Budget 2025 To Improve Drainage Systems - Lee

16/10/2024 07:55 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 16 (Bernama) -- The government should consider increasing the allocation to improve drainage systems in the city under Budget 2025 to be tabled on Friday (Oct 18), says Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

In making the suggestion, Lee said it is essential that the government acts on the flash floods that struck many parts of Kuala Lumpur yesterday and caused major traffic disruptions.

"There have been so many developments in the city in recent years.

“As a result, existing drainage systems are unable to cope with the rapid rate of developments, causing rain, which normally just lasts for an hour or two, to easily flood the city,” he said in a statement today.

Lee also proposed that a special budget be considered to create development plans to further improve the city’s drainage system.

Yesterday, several roads, including Jalan Parlimen heading towards Bukit Aman, Jalan Perak and the Sultan Iskandar Highway, were briefly inundated following the heavy rain from 9 am.

The phenomenon also caused the Parliament sitting to be adjourned to 10.30 am as some Members of Parliament were caught in the floods while on their way to the Parliament Building.
