KPWKM Committed To Tackling Domestic Violence Issue - Noraini

ISKANDAR PUTERI, Oct 22 (Bernama) -- The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM) will continue to focus on addressing the issue of domestic violence, said Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Dr Noraini Ahmad.

She said domestic violence remains a significant challenge for families and is one of the serious problems that persist in society today.

Citing statistics from the Royal Malaysia Police, she said 422 cases of abuse involving women were recorded in 2022, followed by 577 cases in 2023 and 442 cases as of August this year.

“Although the government has enforced the Domestic Violence Act 1994, domestic violence continues to be a serious problem.

“There are still many victims, particularly women and children, who face difficulties in obtaining protection and support,” she said in her speech at the Johor-level Women, Family and Community Empowerment Convention 2024 here today.

Noraini further said that other issues, such as child neglect, mental health and marital challenges, including divorce, also require attention as they could undermine the role and function of family institutions in the country.

She stressed that the community plays a crucial role, especially in providing direct assistance to address issues like abuse or domestic violence.

“Registered Counsellor Volunteers (SKB) have provided crisis intervention in various situations. In Johor alone, they have handled 21,074 cases involving children, adults, persons with disabilities and the elderly.

“We believe that with greater community involvement, such as through the Skuad Waja initiative under the Department of Women’s Development, more people in the state can be helped to overcome their challenges,” she said.
