MELAKA, Oct 26 (Bernama) -- Owners of buildings aged over 10 years in the state are urged to conduct regular inspections and maintenance to ensure safety, especially in public areas.
Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change, and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin, said this is essential to prevent accidents.
"Every private building must have a Certificate of Fitness for Occupation (CF), which certifies that the building or structure has been completed and meets safety requirements.
"This CF has a specific validity period, after which it is the owner's responsibility to maintain their buildings," he said during a press conference today after the Ayer Molek constituency’s Wellbeing Carnival.
The event was also attended by Ayer Molek assemblyman Datuk Rahmad Mariman and Melaka Historic City Council (MBMB) mayor, Datuk Shadan Othman.
Rais added that following a recent incident in which a seven-year-old child tragically lost his life, MBMB issued a notice to the building owner to reassess the structure.
"If any issues are found, we will instruct the local authorities to take action against the building owner to prevent similar incidents in other locations," he said.
Earlier, the media reported that a seven-year-old Vietnamese boy died after being struck by falling cement debris from a shophouse at the Al-Azim Business Complex in Bukit Baru last Tuesday.
The victim sustained severe injuries and was taken to Melaka Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead at 10.12 pm the same day.
