Sultans' Gold Cup: MACC Makes History At Third Appearance

28/10/2024 11:50 AM

MELAKA, Oct 28 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) team, SPRMAceiO, made history with its third appearance in this year's Sultans’ Gold Cup by winning the championship title.

Head Coach Mohd Khalid Shadan praised the team, saying that their meticulous preparation for the 102nd edition was a success, despite falling behind in the first half.

The team staged a comeback to win the final match against Bomba FC, finishing with a score of 2-1 last night.

The former national player of the 80s regarded the victory as the club’s most significant achievement, especially since MACC had not won any matches in the group stage during the previous two editions.

"Alhamdulillah for this success... this year we prepared better and all the players worked hard to compete effectively against our opponents.

“Although we chose to defend in the first half, the players heeded my advice after the break and executed our game plan successfully," he told reporters after last night's match.

Earlier in the match at the Hang Jebat Stadium, Krubong, MACC managed to score goals through Ahmad Basheer Anas Shamsuri in the 63rd and 81st minutes, while Bomba FC scored the opening goal through Muhammad Aidil Syazran Sukarno in the 34th minute.

Bomba FC coach, Mazerul Mohd Mohayudin, acknowledged that luck wasn't on his team's side but expressed gratitude and pride in his players for their determination and effort.

"Thank God our team made it this far. They played well, but a few mistakes allowed the opposing team to score two goals.

"This is our first final in our third appearance at the Sultans' Gold Cup. Even though we didn't win, I'm proud of the team,” he said.

MACC’s victory also set another record by becoming the first team, which is not a state team, to win the King's Gold Cup, a feat previously achieved by the Malaysian Indian Sports Council in 2019.

As the winner, MACC took home a cash prize of RM50,000 while Bomba FC won RM30,000.

Melaka Governor Tun Mohd Ali Rustam gave away the prizes.

Melaka is the host of the 102nd edition of the King’s Gold Cup which involved the participation of 16 teams including three invited teams.
