JAKARTA, Oct 29 (Bernama) -- Indonesian authorities have crushed an organised human smuggling network in South Aceh that was involved in the illegal transportation of both Rohingya refugees and Acehnese into neighbouring countries.

The Aceh Police confirmed that three suspects have been identified, while eight others remain on the wanted list, with officials urging them to surrender voluntarily.

“They share responsibilities, including managing finances, arranging transport, and connecting their networks across Bangladesh, Aceh, Riau, and Malaysia,” stated Criminal Investigation Department director Commissioner Ade Harianto in a statement.

He stressed that the suspects have been operating this smuggling scheme for an extended period, with biometric data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) proving crucial to the investigation.

Police will continue to pursue those involved in human smuggling until they are apprehended and held accountable under the law, noting that their actions violate immigration laws and may also be classified as human trafficking offences.

The successful uncovering of this network is attributed to strong collaboration among various stakeholders, including local leaders, immigration officials, the regional government, UNHCR, and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), he added.
