KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- Axiata Group Bhd (Axiata) chief executive officer of telecommunications business and group executive director Dr Hans Wijayasuriya will step down from the company on Jan 15, 2025, having accepted an invitation to be the chief advisor to the Sri Lankan President on digital economy.

The telecommunications group said during the interim period, Wijayasuriya’s responsibilities to Axiata will continue, including the execution of a transition programme while he makes himself available for the Sri Lankan government’s digital transformation initiatives on an advisory and non-executive basis.

“Axiata will announce any further changes at the appropriate time,” it added in a statement to Bursa Malaysia today.

It said Wijayasuriya heads the pan-region telecommunications operations of Axiata spanning the markets of Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Cambodia.

He also served on the board of directors of the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), the governing body of the global mobile industry.

Wijayasuriya was honoured with the GSMA Chairman’s Award in 2024, the highest recognition by GSMA, for his outstanding contributions to the global mobile industry.

Axiata chairman Tan Sri Shahril Ridza Ridzuan said Wijayasuriya, in his 30 years with the group (Axiata and its predecessor Telekom Malaysia), has been a pivotal force in shaping the company’s strategic direction.

“He has also played an integral role in nurturing a deep reservoir of talent within the organisation,’ he said.

Group chief executive officer and managing director Vivek Sood said Wijayasuriya’s extensive expertise in telecommunications, technology transformation and digitisation will bring tremendous value to Sri Lanka.

“Wijayasuriya’s appointment reflects the depth of Axiata’s commitment to nurturing exceptional leaders who drive change both within our industry and beyond.

“He has been instrumental in advancing our Telco-TechCo agenda and strengthening our portfolio with the aim of delivering long-term value to our shareholders,” he added.
