KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 (Bernama) -- The public is reminded to always be attentive to current weather conditions and obey instructions of the authorities for their safety and that of their families following the start of the monsoon season today.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also advised the public of the need to be aware and prepared for any circumstances during the monsoon season, which is expected to last until next year.

The National Disaster Management Committee chairman also warned of the possibility of floods occurring due to heavy rain in areas that are low-lying and near rivers in the east coast states of the Peninsula, Sarawak and Sabah.

"For the latest information on weather conditions and disaster warnings, click on the official website of the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) at www.met.gov.my,” he posted on his Facebook page today.

On Nov 1, MetMalaysia director-general Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip issued a statement saying that the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) season is expected to start on Nov 5 and will continue until March 2025.

During the initial phase of the Northeast Monsoon, from November to December, heavy rain is expected to occur in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah.

From January to February 2025, the states most likely to experience heavy rainfall are Pahang, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah.
