"Based on the 2023 National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS), the prevalence of diabetes among adults aged 18 and above in Terengganu is 16 per cent, slightly higher than the national rate of 15.6 per cent.

“Given the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases like diabetes, especially among the elderly, it is crucial to address this issue in a comprehensive manner," she added

Dr Kasemani said this after officiating at the Senior Citizens and Diabetes Health Day celebration at the Sungai Tarom District Council Hall here today.

In response to the growing diabetes issue, Dr Kasemani highlighted several initiatives being implemented by the Terengganu Health Department (JKNT) to help improve diabetes management.

"JKNT has organised health screenings for senior citizens at 25 rural clinics and 55 health clinics across the state. Additionally, we have established senior citizen clubs in every health clinic.

"These clubs are run by the members themselves with support from the clinic staff, helping to promote health awareness and diabetes control," she said.
