KUCHING, Nov 11 (Bernama) -- Sarawak is committed to achieving net zero emissions with the introduction of the Sarawak Net Zero and Carbon Plan, alongside enforcing the Environment (Reduction of Greenhouse Gases Emission) Ordinance, 2023, said Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Tabling Sarawak’s 2025 budget at the state assembly today, he announced that RM11 million would be allocated for these initiatives.
“Sarawak is at the forefront of the hydrogen economy, demonstrating our commitment to innovation and our vision of becoming a regional leader in clean energy,” he said.
"Sarawak aims to play a central role in addressing global climate challenges, working toward a Net Zero goal by 2050 while pursuing our vision of becoming a regional powerhouse in renewable energy," he said.
He added that Sarawak is a key player in Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap and is planning to develop a green hydrogen hub.
The emerging hydrogen economy, he noted, brings exciting investment opportunities, from cutting-edge technologies like electrolysers and fuel cells to energy storage and sustainable transport solutions.
On the strategy for forest carbon initiatives, he announced that RM1.5 million would be allocated for forest carbon projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Sarawak next year.
“In line with its climate change strategy, Sarawak has issued four forest carbon permits covering 130,037 hectares.
“The issuance of these permits is a milestone, reflecting Sarawak’s dedication to sustainable forest management while creating new revenue through carbon credit sales in international markets,” he added.
He also highlighted that the Forests (Forest Carbon Activity) Rules, 2022, establish a robust regulatory framework for forest carbon projects in Sarawak.
These regulations provide clear operational guidelines for forest carbon initiatives, covering the issuance of permits, management of carbon credits, and verification and monitoring of carbon sequestration efforts.
