PUTRAJAYA, Nov 14 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is investigating a student from a public institution of higher learning (IPTA) for allegedly selling content involving self-produced pornographic videos on the platform X.

It said in a statement today that it had recorded the male student’s statement after uncovering the activities as a result of monitoring and intelligence operations based on public complaints.

"MCMC’s initial investigation found that the suspect's activities began in 2021, where he re-uploaded existing pornographic content shared by other users on the same application,” according to the statement.

"The suspect's modus operandi then changed to uploading and selling pornographic videos of his own scenes with women he knew, and gained over 100,000 followers on X."

According to MCMC, the student made selling pornographic videos a source of income, with monthly earnings reaching up to RM3,000, with an estimated price of up to RM150 for each video.

An MCMC enforcement team had inspected a premises in Shah Alam, Selangor, and seized a mobile phone and a SIM card believed to belong to the suspect, which were used to upload the content to assist in the investigation.

"The suspect’s friend, a woman, who is a student at a private higher education institution (IPTS), also gave a statement " said the statement.

According to MCMC, the act of selling pornographic videos by the suspect is an offence under Section 233(2) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA 1998) and if convicted, the suspect faces a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to one year, or both.

"The public is urged to report any activities of distributing and selling pornographic content on any social media platform to the MCMC for further enforcement action," added the statement.
