KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 22 (Bernama) -- The Kuala Lumpur Tower will light up in orange on Nov 25 to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (IDEVAW) and the 16 Days of Activism in Malaysia.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNPF) Malaysia in a statement today said for this year’s IDEVAW commemoration, UNFPA Malaysia in collaboration with the Women’s Development Department (JPW) of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development will be organising a number of public engagements.
“The first event, Orange Run, is set to take place on the morning of the Nov 23 (Saturday) at Gemilang Putrajaya Square. This run will officially kick off the #OrangeTheNation campaign to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the 16 Days of Activism in Malaysia.
“On Nov 25, KPWKM’s awareness and advocacy booth will be launched at Parliament. On the same evening, the Kuala Lumpur Tower will be lit in orange, the official colour symbolising a brighter future and a world free from violence against women and girls.
“This symbolic event will signal the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism, focused on positive and solution-centric advocacy towards ending all forms of violence against women and girls,” it said.
The statement said the #OrangeTheNation campaign is an open and inclusive nationwide call to action from Nov 25 until Dec 10, and all are invited to join.
“We invite all owners of buildings, outdoor digital signage, institutions and everyday Malaysians to join in throughout the 16 Days of Activism and take part in our call towards ending violence against women by lighting up in orange or wearing orange as a show of collective solidarity and advocacy,” it said.
This year, Perbadanan Putrajaya will also be joining the #OrangeTheNation campaign by lighting up multiple buildings and bridges including the Seri Wawasan and Seri Saujana bridges, as well as the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) throughout the campaign.
Meanwhile, the Inner Wheel Club of District 330 said it will host a landmark event at Exchange 106, where the crown of the building will be illuminated in orange as a symbolic gesture of hope and solidarity.
“By illuminating this landmark in orange, Inner Wheel and its partners aim to highlight the importance of unity, action, and the shared responsibility to end violence against women and girls,” it said in a statement.
