HAWANA Campus Tour: Bernama Workshops Raise Cybersecurity Awareness

04/12/2024 10:57 PM

ALOR GAJAH, Dec 4 (Bernama) -- The three workshops held in conjunction with the southern zone National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2024 Campus Tour at the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Alor Gajah branch here today are set to provide valuable insights to students, helping them become more aware of the importance of cybersecurity.

The three workshops are Mobile Journalism (MoJo), a fact-checking session led by Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) editors, and a talk on ‘Klik Dengan Bijak’ by officials from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Bernama chief executive officer Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin said that the workshops helped students learn to use the internet more wisely and responsibly.

“With the recent tabling of (the amendment bill) to Act 588 (the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998), I hope that more people, especially students, will take note and understand that many aspects of cybersecurity require serious attention, as misuse can lead to negative consequences.

“At the same time, we are assisting MCMC in raising awareness about the importance of online safety as part of efforts to combat online crime, which has become rampant,” she told Bernama.

Earlier, Nur-ul Afida handed over a donation of a high-capacity computer and a smart television from the Ministry of Communications to UiTM Alor Gajah Campus, represented by UiTM Melaka branch’s deputy rector (Student Affairs) Dr Nadzri Mohd Sharif.

Also in attendance were Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the director of the HAWANA 2024 Project, and deputy editor-in-chief (News Service) Nasriah Darus.

Nur-ul Afida said that the workshops were also intended to give students valuable exposure, preparing them for their future careers after completing their studies.

“The goal is to ensure that the students in the communication field receive the latest information on issues related to the media industry,” she said.

The HAWANA 2024 Campus Tour spans six zones across the country: Sarawak, Sabah, Central, Northern, Southern, and East Coast. The final leg of the tour will be held at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) in Terengganu on Dec 12.

This series of tours is part of the activities held in conjunction with the HAWANA 2024 celebration, organised by the Ministry of Communications, with Bernama as the implementing agency.
