KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 11 (Bernama) -- The “TOKYO NIGHTTIME PROJECT” has been launched in Tokyo's Nishi-Shinjuku area, to revitalise night tourism by combining tradition and innovation.
The project, which involves collaboration with local organisations, aims to bring a vibrant nighttime atmosphere to Nishi-Shinjuku through light displays and other engaging activities for visitors.
The "Nishi-Shinjuku Illumination Market”, which began on Nov 28, marks the start of the project. On Chuo-dori Avenue, along the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, approximately 200,000 champagne gold LED lights illuminate the street for as long as 200 metres, creating a stunning night scene and establishing a new illumination hotspot in Tokyo.
At the lighting ceremony, Judoka Hifumi Abe and Uta Abe of the Park24 club, appeared as guests, where they pressed the light button with a countdown, and the street was enveloped in glittering champagne gold lights.
The project, sponsored by the Tokyo Nighttime Project Executive Committee and co-sponsored by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, will run until Jan 13, 2025, according to a statement.
Key events include the Nishi-Shinjuku Illumination Market and the "Happy New Year Tokyo 2025" countdown celebration on New Year’s Eve.
In addition to the light displays, the Nishi-Shinjuku Illumination Market features food trucks and stalls offering Edo-inspired food and goods.
Meanwhile, the “Happy New Year Tokyo 2025” event will offer live performances, projection mapping, and digital ema (votive picture tablet) displays for participants to share their New Year wishes.
These events are designed to showcase Tokyo’s unique blend of tradition and innovation while attracting both residents and visitors.
