ALOR GAJAH, Dec 12 (Bernama) -- Melaka has received an additional allocation of RM6 million from the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) to tackle flooding in the Masjid Tanah parliamentary constituency, according to Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh.

He said the allocation will be used to implement several flood mitigation projects in areas classified as red zones.

"During the recent visit of the Deputy Prime Minister, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof), to Masjid Tanah, I requested (for the ministry) to look into the flooding issue in Melaka, particularly in the Masjid Tanah parliamentary constituency.

"We are deeply concerned about this issue affecting the residents of Masjid Tanah, particularly in the Masjid Tanah Ria area, who have to face the flood disaster up to four times a year," he told reporters here today.

He spoke to reporters after attending the Flood Hotspots Town Hall Session in Masjid Tanah, also attended by the State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change, and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin.

Ab Rauf said that besides Masjid Tanah Ria, Kampung Sungai Siput and Kampung Sungai Jernih have also been marked as flood hotspots.

According to him, the town hall session was held to gather feedback from residents and to devise relevant and practical solutions, based on the allocated budget, to mitigate the impact of the natural disaster on the community.

He added that similar go-down-to-the-ground sessions will be conducted in stages to identify the causes and solutions for addressing flooding in other parliamentary constituencies in the state.

Ab Rauf said the details of the flood mitigation projects for the Masjid Tanah parliamentary constituency are expected to be finalised within the next two weeks.

He said the projects will involve various agencies, coordinated by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage covering Kuala Linggi, Taboh Naning, Tanjung Bidara, Lendu, and Ayer Limau.
