KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 17 (Bernama) – After a six-year hiatus, KRU, comprising Datuk Norman Abdul Halim, Datuk Yusry Abdul Halim, and Edry Abdul Halim, is reuniting to reignite the passion of their devoted fans.
Following their last performance in 2018, the sibling trio is set to stage the genKRU concert at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, on May 3. The event will also mark the launch of their new album, Kaset.
Norman, 52, said the 1990s-themed concert aims to bring together fans of all generations, making it an epic celebration for local music enthusiasts.
“Why genKRU? The reason is simple — we want to unite all generations, from Gen X to Gen Alpha, under one roof. We want fans of all ages, young or old, to feel comfortable attending this concert.
“We hope that Gen X and Y can relive the 1990s era, while those who missed it can ‘travel back in time’ and experience what it was like,” he said at a press conference yesterday.
Norman hopes that the concert, organised by Icon Entertainment, will leave special memories and become a part of their fans' cherished experiences.
"We won’t disappoint anyone. We’ve always experimented with new things and are confident in our expertise. We are not just singers or entertainers. We’ve made preparations and sacrifices for training and fitness to ensure we deliver the best performance," he said.
Promising various surprises for their loyal fans, Yusry, 51, said it’s not impossible for KRU to perform a selection of songs rarely featured in their live shows.
"Yes, of course. We did it during our last concert, and the audience's response was positive. We also need to choose songs carefully. But there are definitely some songs that need to be presented in a new way, and some that must be performed," he said, hoping the concert will bring back the unique feelings and nostalgia of the 1990s for the audience.
Edry, 48, acknowledged that the trio is making meticulous preparations and will present high-energy dance routines that have become KRU's signature. The sibling group, famous for hits like Mengerti, Fanatik, Awas, Generasiku, and Terhangat di Pasaran, is also welcoming other artistes to share the stage and add to the "heat" of the genKRU performance.
"The dance has become synonymous with us, so it’s impossible for us to just stand still and sing hit songs like Awas or Oh La La without dancing," said Edry.
"Fans who come will certainly want to see the visual performance of the dance, not just a video clip. We also still remember some of the old dance steps and are ready to do new choreography as well," he added.
Meanwhile, the concert organiser, Iman Tang, admitted that he had to wait two years to make his dream of organising a concert for the legendary music group a reality.
"I initially reached out to Yusry on Nov 1, 2022, but my offer was declined. At that time, Yusry said they had retired, Edry had moved to the United Kingdom, and Norman was tied up with business commitments.
However, I didn't give up. I continued to persuade all three of them, and finally, in September this year, they agreed to stage this major concert," he shared.
