MELAKA, Dec 30 (Bernama) -- Melaka recorded a total of 1,972 dengue-related cases from Jan 1 to Nov 16 this year, according to state Health, Human Resources, and Unity Committee Chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem.

Ngwe (BN-Machap Jaya) said that the cases were distributed across Melaka Tengah (1,241 cases), Alor Gajah (214 cases), and Jasin (517 cases), with two deaths reported during the period.

He highlighted that the state government, in collaboration with the state Health Department, has been ramping up efforts to curb the dengue outbreak through a variety of programmes and initiatives.

“Among these initiatives is the Aedes Wolbachia mosquito release project, which has been implemented in Taman Bemban Jaya, Jasin, Pangsapuri Taman Tasik Utama, Pangsapuri Sri Utama and Perumahan Tentera Desa Taming Sari,” he said.

“In addition, control activities for isolated cases and outbreaks are being carried out, along with dengue prevention measures such as the elimination of Aedes mosquito breeding sites, larviciding, thermal space spraying (SRT), and ultra-low volume spraying (ULV),” he said at the Melaka State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting today.

He was responding to a question posed by Datuk Zulkiflee Mohd Zin (BN-Taboh Naning), who inquired about the measures being taken to address the rise in dengue cases in Melaka.

Ngwe explained that in addition to ongoing efforts, the state government has also collaborated with the Department of National Unity and Integration (JPNIN) when areas are declared to be experiencing dengue outbreaks.

“Among the initiatives implemented by JPNIN are weekly announcements to residents every Friday, aimed at preventing the spread of dengue," he said.

"Additionally, pamphlets promoting the cleanup of dengue 'hot spot' areas are distributed every Saturday," he added.
