GEORGE TOWN, Jan 1 (Bernama) -- The Penang government today announced the appointment of 48 individuals, including five new faces, as council members for the Penang City Council (MBPP) and the Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP).
State Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye said the appointment involved 24 councillors each for the two local government authorities (PBT) with the swearing-in ceremony to be held this Friday.
He said the 24 councillors comprised 20 from DAP, PKR (17), Parti Amanah Negara (six), Barisan Nasional (three) and non-governmental organisations (two).
"The five new faces are T. Visvenathan from DAP as Penang City Council members, while the other four -Lim Eng Nam (PKR), Azman Rahim (PKR), Yeoh Kim Kim (PKR) and Zulkiply Ishak (Amanah) are appointed as Seberang Perai municipal council members.
"The State Executive Council, which met last Dec 18, approved the appointment of the 48 councillors for the two local government authorities, which is for one year from Jan 1 to Dec 31 2025," he told a media conference at Komtar today.
H'ng said they were appointed under Section 10(2) of the Local Government Act 1976 and their selection was based on their extensive experience in local administration, professional achievements and the ability to represent the interests of their respective communities.
He hoped that they would be able to play an active role in the administration, bring new ideas and work together to ensure local government authorities in Penang continue to excel.
"This combination of experience, ideas, and new energy is expected to strengthen the administrative system in the PBT, in line with the state's aspirations to achieve excellence in service to the people," he said.
