KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 3 (Bernama) -- Future collaboration between stakeholders is vital in achieving the broader objective of a secure and responsible digital ecosystem through the implementation of the Social Media Licensing Framework.
Petaling Jaya Member of Parliment Lee Chean Chung in a statement today said although not all parties are on board yet, the progress made thus far is encouraging, with the participation of four social media and messaging platforms, namely WeChat, Telegram, TikTok and Meta in the implementation of the framework which took effect on Jan 1.
Lee also urged Google to engage with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) so that they too can participate in the process.
“I also take note of the Communications Ministry and MCMC’s effort to preserve freedom of expression while extending regulations and accountability,” he said.
Lee added that the Social Media Licensing Framework came at the right time as total financial losses under #ScamVictimSupport count has exceeded RM10 million, while some still suffer post-scam traumas after years.
“This is a subject close to my heart as I have assisted many scam victims before and this is a very widespread problem that needs to be addressed.
“Simply put, we need the platforms to take more accountability and responsibility to improve safety and security in the digital world,” he said.
