GEORGE TOWN, Jan 9 (Bernama) -- The implementation of the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project is a step towards providing a more efficient transportation network for Penangites, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
He said it was time for the rapidly developing state to carry out the project to tackle traffic congestion caused by the increased use of private vehicles.
“Without the first line, we will never have the second, third, or fourth lines. This (LRT) project is a starting point for a more significant public transportation system in Penang.
“When this (project) is successful, it can pave the way for future routes, and public transport will become a preferred mode of transportation for the people, helping to tackle traffic congestion issues. It may also be more efficient and time-saving,” he told reporters after the 2024/2025 Living Heritage Treasure Awards ceremony, here today.
On the dispute raised by some parties over a site in Sungai Pinang which is part of the project alignment, Chow stressed that the state government had discussed with the State Education Department to acquire the land, which was initially designated for a school.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate the groundbreaking ceremony of the Mutiara Line LRT construction project in Bandar Sri Pinang this Saturday.
Earlier, at the award ceremony hosted by the Penang Heritage Trust, entertainer, musician, and singer Kathleen M. Rodrigues, 77, Silambam Nillaikalakki martial art instructor R. Asan Anbananthan, 77, and artist and art educator Datuk Tan Chiang Kiong, 92, were honoured in recognition of their contributions to preserving and revitalising intangible heritage in the state.
