KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 11 (Bernama) -- Yayasan Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (YUTP), with the support of Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and Petronas, successfully raised over RM20 million for deserving students through sponsors at their annual Tapestry of Colours Charity Dinner (TOCCD), held here last night.

UTP Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib said that YUTP, established in 2007, was founded with a singular mission of promoting education and providing deserving students, regardless of race, gender, or creed, the opportunity to pursue their dreams at the university.

“Since its inception, YUP has awarded scholarships to 2,624 recipients, amounting to an impressive RM105 million. These scholarships are not just financial aid but lifelines, promises of hope, and a belief in the boundless potential of each student.

“Many of us here were once students and some may have received financial assistance and because of those helping hands, we stand where we are today, stronger and more capable.

“Now, it is our turn to extend that same favour, to offer the next generation the same opportunity we once received, and to be the reason someone else rises above their circumstances,” he said in his speech at the TOCCD 2025.

Mohamed Ibrahim also acknowledged the support of various sponsors, including J.P. Morgan Chase Bank Berhad, CIMB, Deleum, Dialog Group Berhad, Tiger Gas, MISC Group, Kenanga Investors Berhad, T7 Global Berhad, Velesto Energy Berhad, Deloitte, Petra Energy Berhad, and Shopee Malaysia.

He expressed gratitude to their corporate scholarship sponsors, namely Antara Steel Mills Sdn Bhd, Reinhausen Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd, Enquest Petroleum Production Malaysia Ltd, and Velesto Energy Berhad.

“As a charitable organisation, all contributions made to YUTP are tax-deductible under Subsection 44(6) of the Income Tax Act 1967,” he added.

In conjunction with UTP’s 28th anniversary, the TOCCD 2025 launched a crowdfunding campaign for three student-led university social responsibility projects: the ‘Blind Empowerment Campaign,’ ‘Bakau Revival: Restoring Mangroves for a Sustainable Future,’ and ‘SunStops: Powered by Solar, Driven by Community.

UTP stated that all three projects aim to address critical societal challenges and contribute to a more sustainable future.

The event also marked the launch of UTP’s student music group, Sanggar Kirana’s two new gamelan albums, Tala Perenggu and Gatra 3, which feature a blend of traditional and contemporary gamelan songs.

Sanggar Kirana, established in 2002, is dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional Malaysian arts, particularly Gamelan Melayu. The group has also performed internationally, including at Malaysia Night in London and the Gamelan Festival in Solo, Indonesia.

The event was attended by 500 guests, including Petronas Chairman Tan Sri Mohd Bakke Salleh, UTP Board Members, industry partners, corporate guests, and UTP alumni.

Established on Jan 10, 1997, UTP has become a leading private university in Malaysia, built on a 400-hectare (1,000 acres) site strategically located in Seri Iskandar, Perak.

The university, a wholly owned subsidiary of Petronas, offers an extensive array of industry-relevant engineering, science, and technology programmes, catering to undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
