SIBU, Jan 15 (Bernama) -- Some 88 residents of the Rumah Paulus Yan in Nanga Bawan, Kanowit, about 54 kilometres from here, were left with nothing when their longhouse was destroyed in a fire at noon today.
Sibu Zone Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Chief, Andy Alie said all the residents of the 15-door longhouse located at Jalan Nibong Tada managed to escape safely, and no injuries were reported.
He said the cause of the fire and the total damage were still under investigation.
Meanwhile, according to a spokesperson for the Sarawak JBPM Operations Centre, the department received a call about the incident at 12.14 pm.
Teams from the Kanowit and Sungai Merah fire stations were dispatched to the scene.
He said the fire was brought under control by 2 pm and the operation was fully completed almost three hours later.
