WASHINGTON, Jan 18 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti) -- The US Department of the Treasury will begin taking extraordinary measures on Jan 21 to prevent the United States from defaulting on its debt, outgoing Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

"This letter serves to notify you... of the extraordinary measures that Treasury will begin using on Jan 21," Yellen said in a letter to congressional leaders, noting that a “debt issuance suspension period” will start on Tuesday.

The period will last through March 14, 2025, she said.
