Kuantan, Jan 21 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Palm Oil Green Conservation Foundation (MPOGCF) has utilised RM1.7 million of the five-year RM3.18 million allocation from 2021 to 2026 for the conservation of the Malayan Tiger.
MPOGCF, in a statement today, said the funds supported various conservation initiatives for the endangered species. This included providing food and medicine, conducting research, and developing capacity programmes to enhance the skills of personnel at conservation centres.
It said the efforts include the Malayan Tiger Habitat Enrichment Programme, which took place today at the Malayan Tiger Conservation Centre (MTCC) in Lanchang. This event was organised in collaboration with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (PERHILITAN).
"The Malayan Tiger Habitat Enrichment Programme is part of the broader Malayan Tiger Conservation Programme, which aims to preserve and increase the population of this species through ex-situ conservation.
"The programme involved the planting of 95 trees of various species, including Jelutong, Pulai, Meranti Tembaga, and Tembusu. This is a vital step to ensure that the enclosures at MTCC are conducive and resemble their natural habitat," the statement said.
The programme was officiated by the Plantation and Commodities Ministry secretary-general, Datuk Yusran Shah Mohd Yusof, and saw the attendance of MPOGCF general manager Hairulazim Mahmud.
The programme aims to improve the rehabilitation and conservation of the Malayan Tiger and prepare the species for a more resilient return to its natural habitat.
"The Malayan Tiger Conservation Programme is a testament to Malaysia's palm oil industry's dedication to supporting environmental preservation and biodiversity conservation.
"Meanwhile, the tree-planting activities enhance the ecosystem at MTCC, promoting long-term sustainability," the statement said.
