KANGAR, Jan 22 (Bernama) -- Despite the rising cost of goods, a food vendor at Medan Selera Pasar Sena has continued selling rice with side dishes at an economical price, for as low as RM4.50 per plate since 2010.
Husaimi Hashim, 63, when met by Bernama at the food court, said customers could enjoy a plate of rice with a large piece of fried chicken, vegetables and gravies for RM4.50. Husaimi said this price still yields a profit, albeit a slim one.
“My intent in maintaining this low price is to help low-income earners enjoy breakfast and lunch. I still remember the tough times I went through in the past and I want to assist those in need. Typically, a plate of rice with chicken, vegetables and gravy costs around RM6 (in the area),” he said.
Husaimi said he managed to maintain the quality of his food, as evident from the positive feedback from customers.
“Many customers are surprised by the affordable price and are satisfied with the portion size,” he said, adding that he sells 15 types of dishes at the food court, from 7.30 am to 1 pm on Saturdays to Thursdays.
Husaimi hopes the low-priced "nasi berlauk" offer will be an added attraction for tourists to visit Perlis in conjunction with the Visit Perlis Year 2024-2025.
One of his customers, Fauziah Othman, 56, said Husaimi’s food has become her top choice due to its reasonable price and quality, which greatly helps those in need.
“My family and I love eating here. We come almost every day. The food is not only delicious and cheap but also comes in generous portions. It’s definitely worth it, especially given the current high cost of living,” she said.
