KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 (Bernama) -- Australia Day 2025 was celebrated in Malaysia today, commemorating 70 years of longstanding diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The reception, hosted by the Australian High Commission in Malaysia at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, was officiated by the Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Danielle Heinecke, and Malaysia’s Home Minister, Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, as the guest of honour. The event was attended by over 200 guests.

In her speech, Heinecke emphasised the strength of the bilateral relationship and reaffirmed Australia’s commitment to further strengthening ties with Malaysia in key areas of mutual interest.

She highlighted Australia's significant contributions to the Malaysian market, particularly in the export of high-quality products such as beef, dairy, and fresh produce. She noted that these products have played a crucial role in meeting Malaysia’s growing demand for premium food products, reflecting the strong trade partnership and mutual trust between the two nations.

Meanwhile, the event featured a special performance by Malaysian-born Australian singer Guy Sebastian, who captivated the audience with a selection of his popular hits.

Australia and Malaysia established formal diplomatic relations in 1955. Since then, the two countries have enjoyed strong cooperation in various sectors, including trade, defence, education, and tourism.

Australia remains one of Malaysia’s key trade partners. According to Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, in 2022-23, Malaysia was its second largest trading partner among ASEAN Member States and eighth largest partner overall.

Australia is Malaysia's 10th largest trading partner. Total two-way trade in 2022 was valued at A$33.5 billion.
