At Least 70 Killed In Attack On Sudanese Hospital, WHO Chief Says

GENEVA, Jan 26 (Bernama-dpa) -- At least 70 people have been killed in an attack on a hospital in Sudan, World Health Organisation Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Sunday, according to German news agency dpa.

Rival generals have been locked in a brutal power struggle in Sudan since April 2023. The fighting has displaced more than 10 million people and killed thousands.

Tedros said the Saturday attack on the Saudi Hospital, the only functional hospital in al-Fashir, had killed 70 people and injured 19.

"At the time of the attack, the hospital was packed with patients receiving care," Tedros wrote on X.     

"The attack comes at a time when access to health care is already severely constrained in the state due to the closure of health facilities following intense bombardments."

A health facility in al-Malha in the North Dafur region had also been attacked, resulting in a pause in providing primary health care to residents and the displaced, he said.

"We continue to call for a cessation of all attacks on health care in Sudan, and to allow full access for the swift restoration of the facilities that have been damaged," he wrote.

"Above all, Sudan’s people need peace. The best medicine is peace."
