KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 (Bernama) -- Universiti Teknologi Malaysia’s (UTM) Raja Zarith Sofiah Centre for Advanced Studies on Islam, Science and Civilisation (RZS-CASIS), successfully hosted the Royal Conference on Islam and Humanity, today.
UTM, in a statement, said that Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia and Chancellor of UTM, graced the conference, themed ‘Justice in Islam: Its Concept, History, and Contemporary Challenges’. Her Majesty also delivered a royal address during the opening session.
The two-day conference, held at Azman Hashim Hall, UTM Kuala Lumpur, was attended by over 500 participants and provided a dynamic platform for scholars, leaders and practitioners worldwide to engage in an in-depth discussion on the principles and applications of justice within the Islamic worldview.
UTM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Shafry Mohd Rahim, in his welcoming speech, highlighted the importance of the event in fostering intellectual dialogue.
“It is imperative that we bring together scholars, leaders and practitioners to critically explore justice, within its historical and contemporary contexts. At UTM, we are committed to fostering meaningful discussions which promote understanding and collaboration, to address the challenges humanity faces in a postmodern and secularised world,” he said.
The event commenced with an opening address by the Holder of the Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas Chair of Islamic Thought, Prof Dr Wan Mohamad Nor Wan Daud, who explored ‘Justice in Contemporary Islamic Thought’.
Renowned Turkish scholar, Prof Dr Alparslan Acikgenc, then delivered the keynote address, titled ‘Justice in Islamic Theological Discourse', which set the tone for insightful discussions.
The conference also witnessed the launch of the Malay translation of Historical Facts and Fictions, by Royal Professor, Tan Sri Dr Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, titled ‘Sejarah Islam di Alam Melayu: Antara Fakta dan Rekaan', translated by Associate Prof Dr Khalif Muhammar A Harris.
Adding to the significance of the event, QSR Brands (M) Holdings Bhd reaffirmed its partnership with RZS-CASIS, by converting RM1 million of its previous non-expandable endowment into an expandable endowment, aimed at supporting future activities and research initiatives at the centre.
QSR Brands chief executive officer and managing director Nehchal Khanna expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration.
“In 2018, we initially awarded a non-expandable endowment of RM2 million, followed by another RM2 million in 2021. This year, QSR Brands is proud to deepen our collaboration with UTM’s RZS CASIS through a MoA, agreeing that RM1 million of the 2018 endowment will remain non-expandable, while the other RM1 million will be converted into an expandable endowment for activities and further endowment,” he said.
