MELAKA, Jan 27 (Bernama) -- The Melaka government has yet to discuss the proposal to create Jonker Walk 2.0 along Jalan Hang Tuah, as the matter requires a more detailed study considering various aspects.
State Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Committee chairman Datuk Rais Yasin said this is also to ensure the idea does not negatively impact business activities, most of which are long-established and operated by Malay traders in the area.
"Although the state government encourages new initiatives to boost the tourism sector, this proposal needs to be thoroughly examined, including the suitability of the location and its implementation methods," he told reporters at Dataran Ayer Keroh here last night.
Yesterday, the media reported on Kota Laksamana assemblyman Low Chee Leong’s proposal to create Jonker Walk 2.0 at Jalan Hang Tuah, which is seen as having the potential to further boost the local economy.
He said the proposal was also inspired by the success of the night market at Jalan Hang Jebat, which has attracted tourists worldwide for the past 25 years.
