KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 29 (Bernama) -- Chinese communities across Malaysia, particularly in Sarawak and Sabah, are ushering in the Lunar New Year today with festive yet modest celebrations, in line with the “aura” of the Year of the Snake, believed to bring happiness, positive energy and abundant prosperity.
Buddhist devotees mark the occasion by visiting temples for religious ceremonies and personal prayers before gathering with family members.
The celebration extends beyond the Chinese community, as the diverse ethnic groups of Sarawak and Sabah also join in the festivities with activities such as visiting loved ones and attending open house events.
In SARAWAK, the state-level Chinese New Year Open House event at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) was lively, with a large turnout reflecting the spirit of unity and harmony among the multi-ethnic communities.
Organised by Deputy Premier Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, the event was attended by Sarawak Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Sanusi, alongside Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife Puan Sri Datuk Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang.
The celebration featured various cultural performances, including lion dances and traditional musical acts, which highlighted the rich heritage of the Chinese community in the state.
Guests were also treated to a special traditional feast, fostering closer ties between leaders and the public in a warm and friendly environment.
Meanwhile in SABAH, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, in his Chinese New Year message, said that the state’s ethnic and religious diversity strengthens relationships and helps create a harmonious society.
He assured that the well-being of all, including the Chinese community, would remain a priority and thanked them for their ongoing support in advancing Sabah’s development.
“Let’s unite towards a more advanced and progressive Sabah and continue to uphold the harmonious bonds that form the foundation of the state’s peace and development,” he said.
Hajiji and state cabinet ministers are also scheduled to attend the Chinese New Year Open House at Yu Yuan Secondary School Hall in Sandakan today.
Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman and his wife Toh Puan Faridah Tussin are also expected to attend the event, which runs until 2.30 pm today.
