Malaysia On Track To Ratify UN Space Treaties – Chang

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 13 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is on course to ratify space treaties under the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS), Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang said.

He said the full enforcement of the Malaysian Space Board Act 2022 (Act 834) and the Malaysian Space Board Regulations 2024 on Jan 1 marked a significant step in developing the country’s space ecosystem.

“Act 834 is a strategic initiative to ensure Malaysia is well-positioned to navigate challenges and capitalise on opportunities in the global space sector,” he said in a statement today.

UNCOPUOS is a United Nations (UN) body responsible for regulating the peaceful use of outer space to ensure international security and development.

The committee plays a vital role in formulating agreements and guidelines for responsible space exploration, including the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, while fostering collaboration among nations.

Chang said Act 834 also provides a regulatory framework for licensing space activities, managing incidents and accidents, and safeguarding liability against damage claims arising from the launch and operation of space objects.

“Its full implementation will not only enhance regulatory efficiency but also spur innovation and encourage greater private sector involvement in the space industry,” he said.

He added that the space sector is projected to contribute RM10 billion, or one per cent, to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), create 5,000 high-skilled jobs, and generate RM40 million through the data market and application services.
